![]() ![]() That said, there’s nothing stopping you from installing DebianEdu/Skolelinux on your home computer. The OS is meant to be used in schools and can be set up on multiple devices connected to a single network. ‘Skolelinux’ literally means ‘School Linux’ in Norwegian and is a good indication of what the developers were trying to achieve with this distribution. ![]() Originally two different Linux distros for kids, DebianEdu and Skolelinux merged back in 2003 and became a single distribution known simply as DebianEdu/Skolelinux. However, those who do manage to get past its rather steep learning curve will find that there’s a lot to like about this distro, which can serve as the perfect stepping stone for transitioning to the standard Ubuntu later on. In addition, there are also plenty of kid-friendly games such as HangMan, Turtle or Tuberling.Ĭompared to some of the other Linux distros for kids found on this list, Edubuntu is a bit more difficult to get used to as it is mainly intended for older children. Edubuntu includes educative applications like Tux Typing, Tux Math, Lybniz Graph Plotter, GCompris’ Educational suite, and many more. Beneath the surface, however, there are some noteworthy differences between the two, particularly when it comes to the pre-bundled applications. As such, the creators of Ubermix took out many of the complex aspects that might make regular Ubuntu intimidating for beginners and made the learning process as straightforward as possible.Įdubuntu shares an identical interface with its sibling and will be immediately familiar to anyone who has used the regular Ubuntu in the past. The distro’s main goal is to help children learn how to use a computer in a fun and simple way. Just as its name suggests, Ubermix is an Ubuntu-based OS created for educational purposes. The distro can be used as part of a network even when running in a live environment, however, Li-f-e needs to be installed on a hard disk in order to support more than five users. However, there are a few applications that set it apart from some of the other Ubuntu-based distros, such as Brain Workshop, Inkscape, LibreOffice, the LAMP open-source web development platform, and more.Īnother noteworthy feature of this Linux distro for kids is that it is available as a hybrid ISO image, meaning it can be burned onto a Live DVD or used to create a Live USB stick depending on your needs. ![]() Li-f-e shares many similarities with Edubuntu not just in terms of its interface but also when it comes to its software packages. Just as its lengthy title indicates, this Linux distro for kids was developed by the openSUSE community and is aimed at teachers and parents just as much as students. The name of this one is a bit of a mouthful but don’t let that fact alone detract you from checking it out. The latest stable version of SoaS is based on Fedora 29 and was released on October 30, 2018. This version is aptly named Sugar on a Stick (SoaS). While you can use the distro as a complete desktop environment, the developers also give you the option of downloading it on a USB stick and running it without installation. There are hundreds of these Activities that can be downloaded from the Sugar Activity Library, with even more being added all the time.Īnother reason why Sugar is one of the top Linux distros for kids is because of its versatility. Each Activity is usually very self-explanatory and can be used to train many basic skills such as reading, writing or counting. These Activities are basically fun little apps and games that include things like Turtle in a Pond, Maze Web, StarChart, Journal Share, Numbers, and many more. Created by SugarLabs back in 2006, this Linux distro for kids is not just an intuitive desktop environment but also a collection of educational and interactive “Activities.” Sugar is an excellent starting point as this free open-source desktop environment was designed specifically with children in mind. If you want your young ones to stay ahead of the curve, it might be a good idea to introduce them to some of the Linux distros for kids we’re going to talk about in this article. Linux’s open-source nature and versatility will likely prompt it to become the OS of choice for most people in the not-too-distant future. Sure, other operating systems like Windows or macOS might be more popular right now but that could change faster than you think. Although some advanced distributions are used to power everything from supercomputers to systems aboard the ISS, there are also several Linux distros for kids that are remarkably user-friendly and simple to learn. People who don’t have a lot of experience with Linux often assume that this family of operating systems isn’t for everyone. ![]() ![]() ![]() These findings are consistent with the fact that non-metro households tend to rely more on personal vehicles, while metro households tend to have greater access to public transportation. However, non-metro households increased their vehicle ownership by 5.1 percentage points when the asset limit was removed. No effect was found in non-metro areas.Įliminating the asset limit for SNAP eligibility increased liquid asset holdings by 24.7 percent in metro areas, but had no significant effect in non-metro areas. In metro areas, higher vehicle limits increased the number of vehicles owned by 1 percent and reduced liquid asset balances by about 10 percent, suggesting a substitution from liquid to vehicle assets. The researchers also found that the effects of higher vehicle limits and categorical eligibility differed across metro and non-metro areas. The study did find, however, that removing the asset limit through BBCE increased liquid assets by as much as 20.8 percent and increased the probability of owning a vehicle by 3 percentage points. The study found no overall effects of higher vehicle limits on liquid assets, such as checking and savings accounts, or vehicle assets. They excluded households with elderly members, who face different asset limits, and are more likely to be spending down their savings as they exit the labor market. The study focused on households headed by adults with a high school diploma or less education, as they are likely to have low incomes and be eligible for SNAP. This is a very common application in RV ceilings. Households with some savings are also better equipped to weather temporary drops in income, or to cover unexpected expenses. Research indicates that vehicle ownership may help increase employment, because households with reliable transportation can access better jobs further from home. Between 20, the number of States that had higher vehicle limits increased from 23 to 47, while the number that adopted broad-based categorical eligibility increased from 7 to 41. These households still undergo income tests to determine eligibility, but the changes in asset policies can reduce administrative costs and may encourage saving among the poor. Under a policy known as broad-based categorical eligibility (BBCE), States can also allow their residents to be eligible for SNAP if they participate in, or receive any type of benefits from, other assistance programs, some of which have higher or no asset limits. States can opt to align SNAP rules regarding vehicle ownership to those of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and/or Medicaid, as long as the vehicle rules in those programs are not more restrictive than the Federal SNAP rules. However, various policy options and waivers allow States to modify many of these rules. Eligibility for USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is based on a family’s level of income and assets, and the basic rules are set by the Federal Government. ![]() ![]() ![]() Telling not just a story with words, but taking you inside it and making you feel like you are there, with their interpretation. ![]() There is a huge difference between a singer who simply belts out a song that is on a page in front of them, and someone who can convey an entire experience with their voice. Comedian Dennis Miller's short-lived run as part of the Monday Night Football booth in 2001 caused what Miller himself described as a "maelstrom" of perplexed reviews. In the United States, Pat Summerall, a former professional kicker, spent most of his broadcasting career as a play-by-play announcer. There are however exceptions to this - most of the United Kingdom's leading cricket and snooker commentators are former professionals in their sports, while the former Formula One racing commentator Murray Walker had no formal journalistic training and only limited racing experience of his own (he had come from an advertising background and his initial hiring was more of a comic double act than a traditional sports commentary pairing). In the United Kingdom, however, there is a much less distinct division between play-by-play and color commentary, although two-man commentary teams usually feature an enthusiast with formal journalistic training but little or no competitive experience leading the commentary, and an expert former (or current) competitor following up with analysis or summary. An example is NBC Sunday Night Football in the United States, which is called by color commentator Cris Collinsworth, a former NFL receiver, and play-by-play commentator Mike Tirico, a professional announcer. ![]() The most common format for a sports broadcast is to have an analyst/color commentator work alongside the main/play-by-play announcer. The term "color" refers to levity and insight provided by analyst. ![]() They are usually former athletes or coaches in their respective sports, although there are some exceptions. The analyst or color commentator provides expert analysis and background information, such as statistics, strategy on the teams and athletes, and occasionally anecdotes or light humor. It is unusual to have radio and television broadcasts share the same play-by-play commentator for the same event, except in cases of low production budgets or when a broadcaster is particularly renowned ( Rick Jeanneret's hockey telecasts, for example, were simulcast on radio and television from 1997 until his 2022 retirement). Radio and television play-by-play techniques involve slightly different approaches radio broadcasts typically require the play-by-play host to say more to verbally convey the on-field activity that cannot be seen by the radio audience. ![]() The vast majority of play-by-play announcers are male female play-by-play announcers had not seen sustained employment until the 21st century. Other main commentators may, however, only call one sport ( Mike Emrick, for example, is known almost exclusively as an ice hockey broadcaster and Peter Drury for the association football). Because of their skill level, commentators like Al Michaels, Brian Anderson, Ian Eagle, Kevin Harlan, Jim Nantz, and Joe Buck in the U.S., David Coleman in the UK and Bruce McAvaney in Australia may have careers in which they call several different sports at one time or another. The play-by-play announcer is meant to convey the event as it is carried out. Broadcasters in this role are adept at being articulate and carry an ability to describe each play or event of an often fast-moving sporting event. The main commentator, also called the play-by-play commentator or announcer in North America, blow-by-blow in combat sports coverage, lap-by-lap for motorsports coverage, or ball-by-ball for cricket coverage, is the primary speaker on the broadcast. Types of commentators Main/play-by-play commentator Television commentators are rarely shown on screen during an event, though some networks choose to feature their announcers on camera either before or after the contest or briefly during breaks in the action. In the case of televised sports coverage, commentators are usually presented as a voiceover, with images of the contest shown on viewers' screens and sounds of the action and spectators heard in the background. Radio was the first medium for sports broadcasts, and radio commentators must describe all aspects of the action to listeners who cannot see it for themselves. In sports broadcasting, a sports commentator (also known as sports announcer or sportscaster) provides a real-time commentary of a game or event, usually during a live broadcast, traditionally delivered in the historical present tense.
